Colette (1873-1954) Colette, like the cats she adored, had many lives: music hall performer, shopkeeper, actor and three times married. She also managed to enjoy numerous affairs with men and women. In spite of these controversial antics, she made time to become one of France’s greatest writers.
There is no doubt that Colette was a genius. She published over 50 novels, her main themes mostly autobiographical, telling about the joys and pains of love in a male dominated world. “Gigi” the most famous of her books, became a successful Broadway musical comedy and later a major motion picture. Colette also wrote short stories, essays and a libretto for the Maurice Ravel opera, “L’Enfant et les sortileges.” “Be happy, it’s one way of being wise.” (Colette) |
