Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) Sculptor, was born in
the Ukraine. She acquired her passion for working with wood from her father, a master woodworker who moved his family to New England in 1905.
At twenty years old, Louise came to New York to create sculpture. A woman in a man’s world, she was a rule breaker. She scoured the streets of Manhattan collecting wooden crates and scraps that she assembled to make the monumental abstract expressionist sculptures that finally made her famous. As Louise gained recognition in her sixties, she fabricated an art world persona adapting eccentric behavior, dress and make-up to become the doyenne of the avant-garde art world. Her famous quote at art openings was “Buy my work, I need the money!” |
