Dora Maar (1907–1997)
Picasso considered her to be his “greatest muse” however, he failed to credit her with being an extraordinary photographer, painter, poet and, most importantly, an independent woman. Before and after Picasso, Dora was a dominant figure in the Parisian Surrealist art and photographic circles. Beautiful, sophisticated, intelligent and politically astute, Dora had the foresight to photograph the stages of Picasso’s most famous painting, “Guernica” in 1937. Nine years into their relationship, Picasso deserted her for Francoise Gillot.
Writer Roberta A. Smith has said “One wonders what Maar might have done had she not crossed Picasso’s path; and, beyond its documentation, what her fierce intelligence contributed to the thinking behind "Guernica."" |
