Thomas Michael Alleman uses a plastic camera called a
Holga, often referred to as a “toy camera.” The lens is low grade
plastic, resulting in a soft focus with heavy vignetting, creating an
arty, informal and surreal feel to his photographs. Mr. Alleman was
born (1958) and raised in Detroit. After college he began a 15 year
career as a newspaper photographer. In 1995, he was named California
Newspaper Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographer’s
Association, and in 1996, he was named the Los Angeles Newspaper
Photographer of the Year. He is now a magazine freelancer and has been
published in many national magazines.
