On April 19, 2014, Afterimage Gallery began a new show of
color photographs by Walter W. Nelson of The Black Place, made famous
by Georgia O'Keeffe.
Mr. Nelson is a photographer, painter and sculptor who lives in New Mexico. He has had numerous shows around the country and has been a working artist for decades. This latest body of work has just been published by The Museum of New Mexico in a book entitled The Black Place: Two Seasons (see the bottom of the page). This harsh treeless desert in northwest New Mexico basically has two seasons, a parched hot summer and a brutally cold winter. O'Keeffe painted there some 20 years. She observed, "I must have seen the Black Place first driving past on a trip into the Navajo country and, having seen it, I had to go back to paint.... as you come to it over a hill, it looks like a mile of elephantsgrey hills all about the same size with almost white sand at their feet.... Such a beautiful, untouched, lonely-feeling place...." |
